What is Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT)

Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations became mandatory in the United States on February 7, 2022. The ELDT requirements were established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart F to improve the training standards for individuals seeking to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for the first time or upgrade their existing CDL.

Steps to get your CDL

Choose your License

Class A CDL
Allows drivers to operate combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided that the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the towed vehicle is over 10,000 pounds.

Choose your License

Class B CDL
Allows drivers to operate single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more or tow a trailer with a GVWR not exceeding 10,000 pounds. Including Passenger Vehicles and School Buses

Find a School

Find a school that teaches the CDL License that you are looking for. Be sure to inspect the equiptment you will be training on, and ensure that the training program will leave you without restrictions on your license.

Find a Funding Source

Grants and scholarships can be valuable sources of financial assistance for individuals pursuing Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training. While grants are typically need-based and scholarships can be both need-based and merit-based, both are forms of financial aid that do not require repayment.

Get your DOT Physical

There are many locations to get a DOT Physical. Check with your doctor or local clinic.

Get your CDL Permit

Your CDL Permit Test consists of a 3-parts for Class A CDL Vehicles.

Attend School

Once you have found your funding source, passed your DOT Physical, and have your CDL Permit, you are ready to attend CDL Training School! Be sure to study during the duration of your training, and take advantage of any equiptment your school may have to offer, such as driving simulators.

Pass The CDL Test

Your CDL Test will be comprised of 3-parts. Once you pass your test, you can go to the DMV and claim your new CDL License!
