How To Get Your Hazmat
To obtain a Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Endorsement, drivers must undergo a federal security threat assessment and meet state-specific CDL requirements. The endorsement is required for CDL holders transporting placarded hazardous materials under Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Here’s how to apply:
1. Complete the Online Application
- Pre-enroll online or complete the process in person at an application center.
- If you live in Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, or Wisconsin, apply directly through your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
2. Schedule an Appointment
- Book an appointment online or call (855) 347-8371 (available weekdays, 8 a.m. – 10 p.m. ET).
- Walk-ins are accepted, but scheduled appointments take priority.
3. Visit an Application Center
- Provide required identification and fingerprints. Bring one of the following:
- U.S. passport
- Driver’s license + birth certificate
- Other TSA-approved documents (check eligibility requirements).
- Pay the non-refundable application fee:
- $85.25 for new and renewing applicants.
- $41.00 for applicants with a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) in eligible states.
4. Check Application Status
- Track your application online at any time.
- Once approved, the endorsement is valid for five years.
To be eligible to apply, you must
- Hold a valid U.S. CDL.
- Be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, naturalized citizen, or approved nonimmigrant alien.
- Meet TSA and state-specific requirements for lawful presence.
Applicants may be denied due to
- Incomplete or false application information.
- Disqualifying criminal offenses (as determined by TSA).
- Failure to meet state or federal eligibility criteria.
Once you pass the security assessment and complete the application process, your HAZMAT Endorsement will be added to your CDL, allowing you to legally transport hazardous materials in compliance with DOT and FMCSA regulations. For additional details, check with your state’s DMV or visit the TSA’s official HAZMAT Endorsement page.
